this may explain why romney is in trouble, people think his party is out of it. joining me is howard fineman and joe klein of the times. let's take a look at the two polls. the two key states ohio and florida. according to "the washington post," president obama has a four-point lead over mitt romney in florida. four points down there in a very tough state. 51%,/47% for obama. in ohio, the president's lead is a more comfortable eight points. that's dramatic. howard fineman, thank you for joining us, and joe klein of "time" magazine. thank you. it strikes me the numbers i put out tonight, and i'm going to get all through them, shows a party obliterated to reality. she don't seem to watch the news. don't seem to know the huge fight that went on when we realized there was no weapons of mass destruction in iraq. that was the whole reality we lived in, the disillusionment on the right, the confusion in the middle, the anger on the left. they didn't even experience that period of time? >> well, chris, to put a charitably, i think the republican party today is the nostal

romney has to do well, no doubt about it. the debate falls into the media of romney has to perform and if he he doesn't it is an excuse for another round of in my mind disgustingly biased pieces against mitt romney. i believe bill is exactly right when barack obama was challenged in the univision interview and he was challenged very hard. obama looked uncomfortable when he is really confronted with facts and simply worded questions. i think if mitt romney reminds people we have really 11.7% unemployment and not 8.1% that america's best days ca cannot e behind her, they have to be in front of her. i think having a moment of real leadership and maturity and contrasting that with the president who seems more comfort with ellen or the late night hosts than he is talking to the families of these insider attacks. i think romney has to be mature and forceful. yet the idea that it is all in the debate i think that is a little too convenient for the media. >> chris: juan talk about it but also is because we keep forgetting about obama

that was not mitt romney at his best. overall, the thing about president obama is that his skill is in oratory. he's great at sort of exhorting crowds and inspiring people who already agree with him but throughout his presidency and this has been true in interviews, true in press conferences, true in his speeches, he's struggled with the art of persuasion, the art that bill clinton obviously mastered so well. so there, i think there is a weakness for him in the debate, that he has a sort of, he can stumble too, not in the same way that romney can, but he can sort of get tangled up in his slightly professorial style and lose the plot, if you will. >> important as this may be to the romney fortunes, it's a day we discover the romney campaign is planning to unleash, this is their leaking, robust spending in the final five weeks of the campaign. quotes from a republican source, we will spend as much in paid advertising, direct mail and field operations in the next five weeks as we have spent since becoming the presumptive nom
